Listening for Words

Level: All levels- will depend on the text

Teacher's notes:

  1. Read a text to the students, for example the one below.
  2. Ask the students to react every time they hear a certain type of word e.g. an adjective.
  3. They can react by clicking their fingers, clapping or if they feel more energetic, by standing up and sitting down.
  4. The idea is to get the students to recognize the words.
  5. You can further use the text as a comprehension activity.
  6. At the end of the activity ask the students to think of a moral for the story.

Jon was a very absent minded, honest man. One day he forgot to set his alarm and so was late for his very interesting and motivating job. He rushed out of his small but comfortable house and because he was so absent minded forgot to kiss his beautiful and patient wife good bye. He rushed to his motivating job but as he entered his cramped and cold office he realized that he hadn’t kissed his beautiful, patient and long suffering wife! He turned to run home and kiss her but forgot the directions to his own comfortable but small house.

He asked many friendly, helpful people in the street but none could help absent minded though honest Jon. It took him 2 years to finally reach his not too exotic destination. He opened the door to the comfortable but small house to find his beautiful and patient wife pregnant!

The moral of this story is….
