Level: Intermediate

Teacher's notes:

  1. Give the students the pictures of the ailments below:
    stomachache, headache, toothache, backache etc.
  2. Get the students to identify what is wrong with the people in the pictures.
  3. Go over the pronunciation of ache
  4. Ask the students to tell you what they do, when they have the health problems.
  5. To add to their vocabulary, give the students to the matching exercise below.
  6. Go over the pronunciation and the meanings.

  1. Match the following words with the definitions:

    1. I sprained my ankle a) My arm is black and blue.
    2. I twisted my ankle b) I hurt/injured a muscle.
    3. I pulled a muscle

    c) I hurt/injured my back while I was lifting heavy boxes but didn't
    break anything.

    4. I burnt my finger d) I hurt my ankle-it's bigger and I can't put my weight on it.
    5. I strained my back

    e) I turned my ankle in the opposite direction.

    6. I scalded my arm

    f) I put my arm over steam and got boiling water on it.

  2. With your partner what you would recommend for someone to do, if they had the above problems.
  3. Now with your partner discuss old remedies that maybe your family or older relatives would recommend. For example in the USA if you have a sore throat or flu my mother recommends chicken soup. For a bruise she recommends a bag of frozen peas to be placed over the bruise and for a burn she recommends that yo put an onion on it! What do they say in your country?
