Sentence starters

Type of activity: This is a dictation activity initially which then can be developed into a fluency activity.
Level
: Intermediate

Teacher's notes:

  1. Tell the students that you are going to dictate incomplete sentences to them; what they have to do is write down what you say but leave blanks when you tell them to.
  2. Dictate the sentences below to the students.
  3. You may need to dictate them a couple of times and each time you do ask the students to compare the sentences that they have written down with their partner’s.
  4. Once they have looked at each others, ask the students to read out the sentences to you. You may need to write them on the board in order to make sure that the students have accurate sentences.
  5. After this, tell the students to finish the sentences. They should do this alone and write personalized endings.
  6. Once this has been done, put the students into groups of three and allow them time to discuss their sentences with one another. Monitor and correct.
Note: You may want to write your own incomplete sentences using grammatical structures which have recently been taught in class.
