Conditional sentence matching activity

Activity type: this is a matching activity in which students have to put together cut up parts of sentences.

Level: Intermediate and above

Teacher's notes:

  1. This activity practices the second conditional; make sure that the students are clear about that piece of language i.e. in terms of meaning, form and pronunciation.
  2. Print out the sentences below and cut them up where the cutting lines are indicated.
  3. Put the students into groups, preferably groups of threes and ask them to put together as many sentences as they can. Tell them that there are questions and answers mixed together.
  4. Once they have done this, ask the students to match the questions and answers. Then ask them to read out the complete dialogues.
  5. Read out the correct versions.
  6. Then ask the students to ask and answer the questions from the matching activity in pairs in order to practice the language orally. Monitor and correct where necessary.
