Alphabet game

Type of activity: This is a game which involves the students practicing the alphabet and reviewing lexical items.

Level: Beginners +

Teacher's notes:

  1. Arrange the students into one large circle or, if you have a big class, small circles of six-seven students.
  2. Tell the students that this is a game in which they have to go around the circle saying a word which begins with a letter in the alphabet. They must go through the alphabet sequentially i.e. A-B-C-D and so on.
  3. If they are low level students, you will need to demonstrate this activity, for example: Apple; Bear; Car; Dance and so on.
  4. Tell the students that they must do this as quickly as they can. If a student stutters or cannot think of a word, then he or she is out of the circle and out of the game. The idea is for one person to be left in the circle.
  5. Once the students have gone through the alphabet, they should start again but they cannot repeat a word. If a student repeats a word, he or she is out.

Note this is a really fun activity for younger learners.

An alternative:

Limit the type of words that students say, for example you could ask the students to only say verbs or only past participles. This is a particularly useful review activity.
