Alphabet game
Type of activity: This is a game which involves the students practicing the alphabet and reviewing lexical items.
Level: Beginners +
Teacher's notes:
- Arrange the students into one large circle or, if you have a big class, small circles of six-seven students.
- Tell the students that this is a game in which they have to go around the circle saying a word which begins with a letter in the alphabet. They must go through the alphabet sequentially i.e. A-B-C-D and so on.
- If they are low level students, you will need to demonstrate this activity, for example: Apple; Bear; Car; Dance and so on.
- Tell the students that they must do this as quickly as they can. If a student stutters or cannot think of a word, then he or she is out of the circle and out of the game. The idea is for one person to be left in the circle.
- Once the students have gone through the alphabet, they should start again but they cannot repeat a word. If a student repeats a word, he or she is out.
Note this is a really fun activity for younger learners.
An alternative:
Limit the type of words that students say, for example you could ask the students to only say verbs or only past participles. This is a particularly useful review activity.
